This work is likely an illustration for Halévy's five-act opera with a libretto by Scribe. It depicts the descent into hell and the condemnation to the stake of a Jewish goldsmith, Eléazar, and his daughter Rachel.

Signed and dated lower right. Dedicated to "l’ami Carnot."
