Dear Collectors and Connoisseurs,
We are pleased to present our online exhibition Recent Acquisitions, accessible through this Private Viewing and available until the end of May.
This selection brings together a group of recently acquired drawings spanning from around 1500 to the present day, reflecting the breadth of our research and ongoing discoveries.
The exhibition is led by a rare and previously unpublished oil on paper by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as Il Grechetto (Genoa 1609 – Mantua 1664), a remarkable and highly distinctive work within the artist’s oeuvre. It is presented alongside an important and rare drawing by Federico Zuccaro (Sant’Angelo in Vado 1542 – 1609 Ancona), a preparatory study for the upper section of The Baptism of Cornelius the Centurion, executed for the Cappella Paolina in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican between 1580 and 1584.
Also featured is a particularly significant and previously unrecorded drawing after Michelangelo, possibly by Aristotile da Sangallo (Florence, 1480 – 1551): a double-sided sheet with copies after designs for the sculptural decoration of the projected double tomb of the Capitani and the unexecuted double tomb of the Magnifici, datable to circa 1520. Documenting an early and largely unrealised phase of Michelangelo’s work for the Medici Chapel in San Lorenzo, this sheet provides rare and valuable insight into one of the most ambitious sculptural programmes of the Renaissance, and stands as an important addition to the corpus of works related to this project.
The selection further includes a significant and large-scale drawing by Antonio Canova (Possagno 1757 – Venice 1822), a remarkable sheet by Giacomo Cavedone (Sassuolo 1577 – Bologna 1660), and a rare red chalk drawing by Andrea Boscoli (Florence 1560 – Rome 1608).
As always, each work has been chosen for its quality, rarity, and art historical interest.
We hope you will enjoy exploring this selection and would be delighted to hear from you should any work catch your eye.
