This gouache entitled Charlot, created in 1920, features the iconic character of Charlie Chaplin, a symbol of the cinematic era and popular culture. The use of gouache and pencil on paper allows Dufy to capture the vivacity and movement of the dancers, in harmony with the playful spirit of Chaplin's silent films. The shades of blue contrasting with the black and white elements create a visually striking composition that showcases Dufy's talent for boldly blending colors and forms.

The context of the artwork is further enriched by its provenance. Julien Dutilleul, a collaborator and student of Dufy, kept this piece until his accidental death in 1936. Dufy himself expressed deep affection and respect for Dutilleul, calling him his "spiritual son." The Impasse Guelma, Dufy's studio, was a place of creation for the silk manufacturer Bianchini-Férier, where Dufy produced many influential textile designs.

The work remained in the family’s cabinets for over seventy years before being acquired by the current owner at an auction in 2007. This passage from hand to hand adds a layer of historical and sentimental value to this already precious piece.

Raoul Dufy, a contemporary of figures such as Henri Matisse and André Derain, significantly contributed to the development of modern art through his innovative use of color and design. Charlot is a poignant example of his distinctive style and his ability to capture the essence of the era with unmatched vibrancy.
